Hello!
If you have not met him, you have heard me talk about an adventure with him, Casey Kelso! He rides mountain bikes, runs, hikes, climbs mountains, runs out of gas on the way to races, puts smiles on peoples’ faces and many many more things! At 30, he has done more than most people do in a lifetime. Probably one of the most caring, outgoing, happy go lucky, all around good person one would ever hope to meet!!
I will try to make a long story short … Casey has been experiencing some pain in his hip/hamstring over the past 2 years. He went to a doctor here in the States that said take it easy for a while. He did the best he could to “take it easy,” meaning he still was active, just did 80 miles on the bike—not 100!
In May, his job took him to Australia for 6 months. About 3 months into his stay, he could not handle “taking it easy” and went to an orthopedic surgeon there. They took some X-rays and, when they came back, the doc sat him down and said, “I’m not an expert, but I am pretty sure you have bone cancer.” (Editor’s update: Go to the “Treatment” page for a more accurate diagnosis.)
Casey remained optimistic and got a few more tests in Australia that confirmed that he was missing a piece of his hip bone, and he indeed had a form of cancer.
This was in early September of 2008. Fast forward to present: He is back in the States, and has received many more test, all confirming that he has cancer … just not sure which type.
He is currently in Chicago undergoing chemotherapy. His insurance company has denied his doctors’ request for a specific type of chemo. He is going to have to pay for this himself. The cost could sky rocket to hundreds of thousands of dollars. He will probably be on and off chemo for the next 8-10 months. He needs our help!
