Cancer
Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) - A soft tissue sarcoma (STS), or tumor of the smooth-muscle cells. LMS typically occurs in the uterus, stomach and intestine. Although it is rare for LMS to occur other places in the body, primary sites can be found anywhere in the body.
Casey has been diagnosed with a primary leiomyosarcoma tumor in the soft tissue of his left leg adjacent to his pelvis. Sarcoma specialists at Rush University Medical Center believe that the tumor started in the soft tissue and then spread to the bone in his pelvis.
A small bone in his pelvis called the ischium, or sit bone, has been destroyed by the cancer. Fortunately, the only functions of this bone are sitting and structural support for the hamstring, which attaches to the pelvis at the ischium. If the chemotherapy is effective at reducing the size of the primary tumor, Dr. Gitelis and Dr. Virkus, the orthopedic/oncologist/pelvis specialists, are confident that Casey will have very high or near perfect functionality of his leg.
