A little bit about Casey

Casey is as active an individual as we have ever met—he is a cyclist, a mountain climber, a skier, and a runner. He is also one of the warmest individuals we have ever met. Casey always has a smile on his face and is always willing to help out a friend.

 

Casey’s diagnosis & treatment

Our good friend Casey was diagnosed last year with leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer. While Casey has a top-notch oncologist that specializes in this type of cancer, we were surprised and shocked to learn that his employer-provided insurance plan has refused to cover the chemotherapy and surgery that he needs.

 

Casey’s out of pocket medical expenses are accumulating quickly. In the first 3 months of treatment they have exceeded $30,000. Currently he is paying ~$3,300 per week for chemotherapy, which his insurance company, Principal Financial, has refused to cover. The pharmacy at the hospital needs cash for the treatment every week before treatment begins; i.e., no money = no treatment. A round of chemotherapy with the drugs Gemcitabine + Taxotere costs about $9,000. The third chemotherapy drug prescribed by Dr. Kent is Avastin. It was dropped because it is prohibitively expensive—$8000+ per treatment. The total cost of treatment (16-30 three-week rounds) could balloon to somewhere between $100,000 - $300,000.

 

The good news is that the treatment is working and in the first 6 weeks of chemotherapy the primary soft tissue tumor has been reduced by as much as 30%! This is amazing, as soft tissue sarcomas rarely respond to chemotherapy and are very aggressive in metastisisizing (spreading throughout the body).
